Oh, right on, Webster! Today housewarmings are still fairly traditional, especially for newlyweds or a couple's first house. For some time a gift has been expected to the hosts; with firsts homes these are supposed to be useful household items. Otherwise, wine, flowers, and such are fairly standard. Dinner or hors d'euvres are served, and there is usually a tour of the house. I'm sure Letitia Baldridge/Miss Manners have quite a bit more to say on the subject.

House"warm`ing (?), n.

A feast or merry-making made by or for a family or business firm on taking possession of a new house or premises.

Johnson.
