A colorful colloquialism of the American South used to express an extremely uncomfortable degree of heat, usually one that can not be tolerated except for a short period of time, or one which is initially intense and then lessens as contact with it continues. Examples include:


The important thing to keep in mind when using or hearing this term is that it applies to things which are very, very hot, but not hot enough to really burn you or seriously impair you unless you get too much of it. Relative to other levels of heat, two rats fucking in a wool sock is hotter than a hooker in a church, but not hotter than hell's hinges.
