(Also "Hodmimir's Holt" or his "Forest" or "Grove," plus many other spelling variants.)

In Norse mythology, a place of refuge for a man and a woman who will survive Ragnarok, the end of the world as we know it.

Ragnarok is a very, very bad day. Almost all the Norse gods die, the world tree Yggdrasil burns, and everything pretty much falls apart. Much is destroyed by the sword of Surtr, the leader of the basically evil and destructive fire giants. Only Hoddminir's Holt, an ancient forest, is immune to the havoc Surtr wreaks.

Lif and Lifthrasir ("Life" and "Eager for Life") hide there and sleep through the apocalyptic destruction. When they wake up, they find the shattered earth verdant again, renewed and revitalized, ready for them to emerge and repopulate it.
