Like all good Greek Mythology, the story of Hippothoon begins with a romantic evening of supposedly consensual incest. Hippothoon is the son of Poseidon and Poseidon's own granddaughter Alope, in what can only be considered the world's strangest instance of robbing the cradle. After giving birth to her son, Alope's father, Kerkyon put her instantly to death. After the death of Kerkyon, Hippothoon ruled over Eleusis and this helped to secure his role in the Eleusinian Mysteries.
