The Icelandic literary society. Founded 1816, with branches in Copenhagen and Reykjavik (merged in 1912).
The society, still active today, represented a purist line in matters of linguistic politics (always a hot political issue in Iceland), played an important cultural and political rôle in the progression towards Icelandic independence from Denmark.
Among the publications of the society are both scientific and literary works, as well as the periodicals Tímarit hins islenzka bókmenntafélag (1880-1904) and Skírnir (from 1827).
