Famed author and economist, Henry George wrote Progress and Poverty, a bestselling book which attempted to analyze poverty and provide a solution. The solution he postulates is the elimination of all taxes except those on land values. This eliminates the unfairness in taxing the product of labor by taxing the exclusive use of that which you did not create, the land itself. It is a philosophy which is embraced by a number of people with libertarian tendencies.

Henry George was born in Philadelphia in 1839, and died in 1897 during a campaign for mayor of New York.
