German egyptologist. Born 1827, died 1894.

Something of a child prodigy, Heinrich Karl Brugsch managed to decipher the demotic script at the tender age of 16. In 1868, he was made professor at Göttingen university. From 1870 to 1879 he was the first to teach Egyptian students egyptology, at Cairo.

Brugsch was, by all accounts, something of a workaholic - his prolific production included numerous handbooks on Egyptian texts, as well a a seven-volume Egyptian-demotic dictionary.

The most significant studies by Brugsch are those concerning themselves with ancient Egyptian history, geography and calendars.
