Nineteenth century German physician was the director of the state mental hospital in Frankfurt from 1851 to 1888. His groundbreaking work in the treatment of the mentally ill has been eclipsed by the phenomenal popularity of his 1845 twisted children's book, Struwwelpeter. He wrote and illustrated it for his sons because he could not find a book that wasn't too didactic, dreary, or stupid.
