The logistical opposite of Voice Carry Over, Hearing Carry Over (HCO) is used by individuals who can hear telephone conversation but have limited or no ability to speak. Some labor is involved in HCO on older TTYs, as the speech-impaired person must repeatedly pick up the handset to listen and then return it to the acoustic cups to speak. New technology has simplified this process some; it is possible to use all-in-one phones (such as Ultratec's Uniphone models) to communicate through HCO without all of the pauses to pick up and replace the handset.
