Official name of the arena in San Jose, California that serves as the home to the San Jose Sharks hockey team. The Golden State Warriors also used it as their home court during the 1996-1997 NBA season, while their arena in Oakland was being vastly remodeled.
Originally known as the San Jose Arena when it opened in September 1993, the arena soon picked up the nickname of "The Shark Tank" thanks to it's NHL franchise residents. Compaq then bought the naming rights and the arena became known as "The Compaq Center at San Jose" (to avoid confusion with the other Compaq Center arena in Houston, Texas). When Compaq and Hewlett-Packard merged in 2002, HP inherited the naming rights, and chose to cleverly tie the arena name to its Pavilion line of personal computers.
