The concept of Gully Gully, also known as Gully or Zully, takes its name from the fictional character of the same name who appeared during a sketch featured in the Paul Hogan Show. The sketch concerned an Arunta tribesman wearing crappy Adidas tennis shoes, the joke being that a member of a tribe apparently isolated from Western influence was wearing such a product.

The unintentional humour however was that his shoes were wack. Gully has since been used as a term to describe similar trainers, costing between 6 and 9 pounds. Theses trainers are promoted as having features like "protected instep", "padding", and "everything you could want" with names like "Team Club", "Pro300" or "Run Bird".

Gully can also mean anything cheap, tacky or kitsch.
