Strange beings from a long-forgotten age, they were worshippers of the Outer Gods. Those who remain in our world feature prominently in the stories of H. P. Lovecraft.

One must be careful not to confuse the Great Old Ones (Cthulhu and co.) with the Outer Gods (Azathoth et al.), the Deep Ones (Children of Father Dagon), or the Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep, the soul and messenger of the mad and insensate Outer Gods.
