Born Anna Mary Robertson Moses in 1860 on a farm in Greenwich, NY. She was nearly 80 when her career as a professional artist began. Known as Grandma Moses, Anna painted tender images of farm life using house paint and pine wood boards. In 1938, a New York art collector saw her work in a store window and immediately purchased the lot. Almost immediately, Moses bacame a celebrated folk artist. Her simple images seemed to go over well with city people obsessed with the ongoing war effort. Until her death at the age of 101, Moses painted images on commission for celebrities and holiday cards.
