A play written by Woody Allen during the 70s. One could say that it is a hybrid of Luigi Pirandello’s ‘Six Characters in Search of a Author’ and Allen’s J.S. Perelman like wit. As in ‘Six Characters’, the characters blur the line between reality and fiction when they take form and attempt a coup, over throwing the artistic constraints enforced by the writer upon his creations. In God (a play), a dramatist writes a play that is acted out down stage, away from the writer. At one point, the character learns his fate and asks the dramatist to intervene and save his creation. As the boundaries between character, writer and audience breakdown, Woody Allen himself calls in to set things back in motion.
