1990 the two halves of Germany, East Germany or GDR and West Germany or BRD became united again as Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD). There were two halves because after World War II the three zones governed by Great Britain, France and the USA were joined as Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD) and became part of the capitalistic side of the world in the cold war. The eastern part (former soviet governed zone) became part of the Warsaw treaty, the socialistic (some would say communist) side of the world in the cold war. Between the two systems was a thorougly enforced border line. One special part of this border was the Berlin wall, build in the 60's, dividing West Berlin and East Berlin., with West Berlin being a capitalistic enclave in the socialistic GDR.
