Gene Colan was born on September 1, 1926 in New York City. He started working for Timely Comics (the predecessor to Marvel Comics) in the late 1940's on supernatural titles such as Journey into Mystery and Menace!. Colan then moved onto DC where one of his jobs was to illustrate Hopalong Cassidy. In the 60's, he returned to Marvel where he worked on Marvel standards such as Dr. Strange and The Silver Surfer. He was especially known at this time for his work on Daredevil.

Colan is credited with introducing a more cinematic feel into comic books using devices such as blurring lines to suggest motion and sub-dividing panels to reflect the passage of time.
