A budget offering from Nvidia, circa 2002. This low cost graphics card is aimed at system manufacturers and the terminally cheap. Three models are available, the 460, 440 and 420 with higher numbers denoting better performance. All models come with 64Mb of RAM and share features such as dual displays with the more expensive GeForce models.

Designed to allow people to say "I've got a GeForce 4" it is, unfortunately, little more than a GeForce 2 with knobs on. The hardware community is universally unimpressed due to the card's lack of support for DirectX 8 (a standard that the older GeForce 3 fully supports) and its mediocre performance.

Offered below, courtesy of Tom's Hardware Guide, are the results of a benchmark involving a cross-section of currently available graphics cards. The Benchmark used was 3D-Mark 2001 SE and all graphics cards were run in the same machine.

GeForce 4 4600 - 9889
GeForce 4 4400 - 9486
GeForce 4 MX 460 - 6139
GeForce 4 MX 440 - 5653
GeForce 3 (Ti 500) - 7783
GeForce 2 (Ultra) - 5256
ATI Radeon 8500 - 8414
