Main character in James Joyce's short story "The Dead," who is also mentioned in Ulysses. He is one of Joyce's alter-egos, or more precisely, a depiction of what Joyce feared he would one day become--a suspicious, arrogant, unfeeling man whose wife never really loved him and whose mother still controlled his life even from the grave. However, Gabriel is given the gift of an epiphany at the end of the story, wherein he is able to realize that this is what he's become, and so one is left to conclude that perhapse he is about to remake his life into something better.
