Franeker is one of the eleven cities in Friesland, a province in the north of The Netherlands. Although the city only has 13,000 inhabitants, it has a remarkable historical fact to be proud of. Franeker is the smallest University city in the country, 'though the Franeker University does not exist anymore. It got famous because of Anna Maria van Schurman, the first female student ever in The Netherlands.

Franeker is situated in the west of Friesland, between the larger cities Leeuwarden (the province capital) and Harlingen, which is on the Waddenzee coast. Franeker has a train station and lies at the Harinxma canal, an artificial waterway that provides boat connections through the whole of north Netherlands together with the Princess Margriet canal, the Starkenborgh canal, the Eems canal and the Winschoterdiep.
