In baseball, "first base" is the first of the four canvas bags or rubber plates which must be touched by a runner in order to score a run. Manned by the ever-important first baseman. Unlike the other bases, sliding into first base is rare, unless you're going by a certain alternative definition.

From the batter's perspective, first base is located 45 degrees to the right, 90 feet away from home plate.
