A novel by Robert Heinlein that's (basically) composed of two main sections. It's an okay book, but no Starship Troopers.

The first half of the book is about a nuclear apocalypse that a man and his family survive. After the blast, they awaken in a parallel universe and must fight the usual things such as environment, health, shelter, etcetera.

The second half involves Farnham's family being discovered by a futuristic group of people, who take them in as slaves and begin teaching them of their own bizarre culture and language.

All through the entire story the family and their slave Joe are constantly playing bridge - like as the world is coming to an end around them. And then the ending of the book attempts to add a little plot twist, but I won't spoil that for you.
