Elizabeth George Speare was born on November 21, 1908, in Melrose, Massachusetts. Growing up, she spent many summers playing alone on the New England shore. She told herself stories to keep amused, and began writing at age eight.

She earned a degree, taught high school English, raised a family, and only then was able to find adequate time to write the books she'd been percolating for decades.

Speare died on November 15, 1994.

Quotes:

"Fiction is the textbook for the heart."
