A small version of an hourglass which measures approximately a three minute period of time, the length of time it takes to cook a soft-boiled egg. As with the hourglass, sand must flow from an upper compartment into a lower compartment via a small passage between the two. Once all the sand has been drawn to the bottom compartment, a set amount of time will have passed; in the case of the egg timer, three minutes.
