Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Eduardo Galeano is perhaps the greatest Latin American writer since the great Jorge Luis Borges. Writer, historian, and journalist, Galeano is author of several critically acclaimed books, including the Memory of Fire Trilogy which won him the 1989 American Book Award. Other notable works include Upside Down: A Primer for the Looking-Glass World, Open Veins of Latin America, and Soccer in the Sun and Shadow. Mr. Galeano is also the first ever recepient of the Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom.
