A gruesome form of domestic abuse found in India and Nepal, societies with arranged marriage and dowry. Frequently, in-law dowry demands are large or are increased after marriage. If the wife's family is unable to comply by a certain time, the wife may be killed in a wife burning. At least 5000 women die each year for not bringing in enough dowry. The UN estimates that number may be as high as 25000. At least a dozen women die each day in 'kitchen fires', which are often passed off as accidents, because their in-laws are not satisfied with their dowries. Only a few of the murderers are brought to justice.
