An index of 50 blue chip stocks from nine stock exchanges, representing the largest multinational corporations in the world. The index is supposed to represent the most stable large-cap stocks from around the globe, where investors could feel confident placing their money for the long term.

Each year, the components of the index are changed. In 1992, when the index was established, there were fifteen Japanese mega-corporations on the list: now, that number has dwindled to two. In the meantime, more European firms have found their way in, from 13 in '92 to 21 today.
