I'm just back from watching
Fritz Lang's
silent movie of
Die Nibelungen (no direct relation to
Wagner's
opera). It was very nicely done, with a
live pianist (this means that the
pianist was
alive, but it also means more than that).
Unfortunately, the film was in German, and there was no subtitling. It may seem as if it doesn't matter what language a silent movie is in, but in fact those slides make a great difference. And to make things worse, the slides were in the sort of mock-Gothic font popular in the 1920s in Germany.
The film itself is highly recommended; just (if you don't speak German) make sure to verify at the box office that translation will be provided. This screening was documented as "Silent, Eng. titles", but that wasn't the case.
