Short for Development Operations. This career field is a rather poorly defined collision of Infrastructure as a Service, software development, and classic systems administration. Members of these teams can often be found on pager duty or working with twenty-first century server management tools such as Chef and Puppet.
Other responsibilities may include development of continuous integration tools, setting up alerting systems like Nagios, or acting like the traditional NOC on programming steroids.
DevOps positions often attract what is known as the brogrammer - a subclass of tanned, collegiate individuals known for their love of Red Bull, beer, and office ping pong tables. As of 2014, positions in this field are in high demand by startups and companies wishing to be startups.
