Denmark Groover, JR.

Born: June 30, 1922. Quitman, Georgia, USA.

Died: April 30, 2001. Macon, Georgia, USA.

Buried: Riverside Cemetery. Macon, Georgia.

Groover was a member of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, where he served as a pilot in the Black Sheep Squadron. Also where he gained a partially-paralyzed right arm.

He also eventually became a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives. He served from 1953-1956, 1963-1964, 1971-1974 and 1983-1995.

He represented the Bibb, Twiggs, Jones, Jasper and Monroe counties. In Georgia, of course.

Perhaps most known for sponsoring the inclusion of the confederate battle flag into the Georgia state flag in 1956 as a form of protesting forced integration, then changing his mind in 2001 and endorsing the reversal of this decision.

A statement from senator Zell Miller, in memory of Denmark Groover: "I have never known a more effective legislator. When he `Groover-ized' a bill, it was either totally without defect or full of defect, whichever was his goal."
