The Defense Security Service (DSS), formerly the Defense Investigative Service, is an arm of the US Department of Defense responsible for personnel security investigations, industrial security management, polygraph research, and security research and training. It was established in 1972 and is currently directed by Lt. Gen. Charles J. Cunningham, Jr.. The Service is responsible for the defense portion of the National Industrial Security Program, the Key Assets Protection Program, and the Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives Security Program.
