The first martyr of the Revolutionary War. He was an escaped slave who became a sailor and took up residence in Boston.

His fame comes from being the most notable casualty of the Boston Massacre. He was shot after leading a group of colonists in taunting British troops.

Some sources say that Attucks was actually the first to attack the troops and others say that he basically got in the way of a musket ball.

He was buried in a mass grave with the other casualties. Eventually a monument was erected for him in Boston Common.
