Soaked in the diesel of warboys' war

OK, so everyone other than a few deranged Martians realizes the Gulf War was about oil. Other people's oil. And America's right to suck it up at millions of barrels a day. That was our vital national interest. Nothing more, nothing less. Saddam Hussein? Hey, he threatened to get in the way of our petroleum fix.

So we went to war over oil. We suckered Hussein into invading Kuwait so that we could "legitimately" destroy him and nip in the bud any plans he had. He asked our permission, we gave it, he went ahead, and we turned on him like a red-headed stepchild.

But surely Afghanistan is different. We're responding to a vicious, murderous attack by terrorists. Afghanistan has nothing we want (i.e., no oil). Wrong 'Em Boyo. Read some Pakistani or Indian newspapers. You might even catch a hint of it in the UK's better dailies. For there's oil in them thar hills -- they're just not Afghanistan's hills.

The big meeting has decided
That total war must burn on the grove

The hills belong to Central Asia's Stans; Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - you could throw in Azerbaijan, but it doesn't end with -stan. Afghanistan has the misfortune of being the place everyone wants to build a pipeline to get all this black gold to market. Ahh, there's the rub.

Unocal has already spent millions preparing the way, even flying Taliban members to Texas to be wined and dined and taken shopping (one of them allegedly bought a comb!). The Clinton administration bent over backwards trying to help Unocal out...and then the attacks came - on the embassies in Africa and the USS Cole. The great bin Laden hunt was begun and all of Unocal's wet dreams dried up.

Tell the news for me, Sammy
They're searching every place on the grove

You see, US companies can't sign business deals with unrecognized governments. The Taliban ain't gonna be recognized anytime soon - not now, not with all that Osama baggage they're carrying. What's a poor boy to do?

Hows 'bout we replace the Taliban? Yeah, that's the ticket. We replace the Taliban, put a government in place that we can recognize and -- BINGO! Pipeline gets built and oil for everybody. We're talkin' oil fields valued at $3 trillion !

The wind has blown away the corner soul

Black helicopter stuff? The US would never do anything so dirty and underhanded. Yeah, right.

Corner Soul by The Clash

Is the music of grove skin rock?
Soaked in the diesel of warboys' war
Blood, black gold and the face of a judge
Is the music calling for a river of blood?

Beat the drums tonight, Alphonso
Spread the news all over the grove
The big meeting has decided
That total war must burn on the grove

Does it mean I should take my machete
To chop my way through the path of life?
Does it mean I should run with the dog pack
Is that the way to be the one to survive?

Never need a gun says Tai Chi
Move on up to dragon snaps his tail
Fall back on still waters
Hammer with his eye on the nail

Spread the word tonight please, Sammy
They're searching every house on the grove
Don't go alone now, Sammy!
The wind has blown away the corner soul

Tell the news for me, Sammy
They're searching every place on the grove
But don't go down alone now, Sammy!
The wind has blown away the corner soul

Is the music calling for a river of blood?
