A later variation on bebop. The term was coined following Miles Davis' short-lived Birth of the Cool-era band, which used softer, orchestral textures and a more laid-back approach. The term was championed by (mainly) white Californian musos&and became an aesthetic in its own right, spurring an East Coast vs West Coast rivalry that long predates the rap wars. The "watered-down" (lacking in blues and bravado) fruit of that aesthetic engendered a backlash of sorts, called hard bop.
