Control Pictures is the name of a range of characters in the Unicode character encoding standard.

The C0 control codes and space, U+0000 thru U+0020, sometimes need to be displayed in a human readable way, and thus a conventional representation has been developed for these nongraphic characters.

The CNS 11643 standard encodes characters for pictures of control codes. Two other standards define the glyphs :

  • ISO 2047:1975 Information processing -- Graphical representations for the control characters of the 7- bit coded character set

  • ANSI X3.32:1990, American National Standard for Graphic Representation of the Control Characters of the American National Code for Information Interchange

In addition to the standard glyph for space, , two additional glyphs are supplied to represent a space : and .

Unicode's Control Pictures code block reserves the 64 code points from U+2400 to U+243F, of which 39 are currently assigned.

The diagonal lettering glyphs are only exemplary; alternate representations may be, and often are used in the visible display of control codes.

Number of characters added in each version of the Unicode standard :
Unicode 1.1 : 37

All the characters in this code block are in general category Symbol, Other So

All the characters in this code block are in bidirectional category Other Neutral ON

The columns below should be interpreted as :

  1. The Unicode code for the character
  2. The character in question
  3. The Unicode name for the character
  4. The Unicode version when this character was added
