The arena was built in 1981 and cost $85 million. The arena is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey in an area called the Meadowlands. It has close connections to the New Jersey Turnpike. The nearest airport is approximately 10 miles away, Newark International Airport.

It is the home to several sports teams: the New Jersey Devils since 1982, the New Jersey Nets since its construction in 1981, the New Jersey Red Dogs since 1997, and the Seton Hall Pirates. It is a concert venue as well.

It has a seating capacity approximately from 16,000 to over 20,000 depending on the arena configuration. It has luxury box seating at the concourse level. The arena shares its site with Giants Stadium and has a parking capacity of 24,800.

Formerly named after Brendan Byrne, this arena was renamed in in 1996 after Continental Airlines paid $29 million to the New Jersey Sports/Expo Authority for naming rights. The contract lasts for 12 years. Thanks to this deal, the parking lot is no longer partitioned into boring names such as "A1" and "D6." Rather, you will now be able to say you lost your car in South America.
