20th Century art movement pioneered by Marcel Duchamp, questioned the idea that art needed to be represented by any physical object whatsoever. In fact, pure Conceptualists insisted that there should be nothing that could be 'owned' or 'hung in a museum' and if so, then it wasn't truely conceptual.
