Coined in the mid-80's, I think, in the face of frequent news reports about the homeless. It's a fatigue or ennui towards issues that require you to exercise a little compassion in understanding them; it's the "no mas" inability to mentally "walk a mile in another person's moccasins".

Not confined to major issues like the homeless, refugees, war, natural disasters, the suffering of children etc. Can be experienced by those in a service industry, customer service, or other professional situations where the verbal outpourings or neediness of others is unavoidable. Soon this fatigue (the inability to empathize or sympathize) infects one's personal life and affects one's reactions to the problems of loved ones and friends. And then, even, to their lightest narratives about what their day was like. It all becomes a case of too much information about anyone, anything, anywhere.
