Flowers that look like vaginas

Clitoria is a genus of flowering plants that are widespread across tropical and temperate regions of the Earth. They are particularly noted in Southeast Asia, where the flowers are ground to make food colorings, or sometimes eaten as food themselves, most typically battered and deep-fried. The most famous species of the genus is Clitoria ternatea, also known as the butterfly pea, which is widely used in Southeast Asian cuisine and Indian ayurvedic medicine.

Unlike many species with weird-sounding Latin names which are coincidental, the name clitoria actually means pretty much just what it sounds like. These flowers were so named by the great German botanist Georg Eberhard Rumphius because they invariably look just like human vaginas, complete with labia and clitoris. Indeed, the local names for these flowers in several languages have similar meanings.
