Chruscik (plural is pronounced ker-SHICK-ee) is a delicious Polish dessert/breakfast dish that has been a part of the Poland’s culture for centuries. Tied in little bows and covered in sugar, these pastries are often prepared for religious holidays (particularly Easter), but they can be made anytime for a delectable snack. Here’s what you need.
- Mix the eggs and salt until the mixture becomes thick and yellowish.
- Add in the sugar, butter, vanilla and rum and continue to beat until smooth.
- Sift the flour and baking powder together, and add to the egg mixture a little at a time.
- When it becomes thick and dough-like, knead the mixture for about half an hour.
- Divide the dough into small rectangular pieces (they don’t have to be perfect). Make a slit at one end of the dough, and fold the opposite end through the slit. If done correctly, it should resemble a bow.
- Fry the bows in the vegetable oil at around 375 F. When golden, remove and let them dry on a towel.
- Pour as much sugar as you want over them. Go crazy.
