An outstanding work by the religious sociologist H. Richard Niebuhr. He draws upon the scholarship of Ernst Troeltsch to create a model for understanding the relationship between religious groups and the larger culture in which they are embedded. He uses terms such as "Christ above culture" and "Christ against culture," but his analysis is also interesting when applied to non-Christian communities.
