A British term for a place that serves fish and chips, usually to take away. Same as chippie.

Besides the meanings noted elsewhere in this node, chippy is an adjective used to refer to an aggressive and belligerent person who likes to fight; apparently this meaning is derived from the expression chip on your shoulder. Hockey matches which feature lots of blood might be referred to as "chippy games".

Chippy is also a slang term for prostitute or loose woman, and Roget's Thesaurus lists it as a synonym for libertine, along with words like dame, grisette, demimondaine, sapphist, and (my personal favourite) spiritual wife. Woo hoo!

heyoka says re chippy: it's also slang for a carpenter, in England, anyway... Perhaps because of the sawdust and wood chips they produce?
