Name used in the Torah for the people now called the Jews. The name commemorates the fact that the original Jews were the descendants of Jacob. Jacob was renamed Israel by JHVH (the Hebrew God) after wrestling for a day and a night with one of God's angels. Israel means "struggles with God."

The name "Jews" was not adopted until the Children of Israel settled in Canaan some hundreds of years later.
