Chigüire is the Venezuelan word for a capybara, Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris. In the western llanos, it is also called a piropiro.

Chigüires in Venezuela are the focus of a major conservation effort, to get people not to see them as pests. The capybara population in Venezuela has decreased greatly in the last century because of the depradations of packs of wild dogs.
