Chauras was a first-century
Sanskrit poet, also known as
Chaura-panchasika or
Bilhana. His most
famous work was
Fifty Verses by a Love Thief, which was later
translated by E. Powys Mathers as
Black Marigolds.
To cut a long story short, Chauras fell in love with a princess, was imprisoned by her father and wrote the poem in prison. There are various outcomes of this story, since it is now a legend; the happy ending is that he escaped and wed the princess, living happily ever after. The gruesome and more likely ending is, of course, that he was decapitated and served as an entrée.
