Charles Hawes was born in 1889. He liked to go for "good, long walks," sometimes 20 or 30 miles. He taught his son to call him "The Old Man," and encouraged him to believe that adventure was around every corner. He read poetry to his kids. It has been said that Charles Hawes was a well-liked man and made friends very easily.

Hawes's middle name was Boardman. He died in 1923.

I am aware that none of the above information tells how he became an author of children's books, or what led up to his winning the Newbery in 1924. Sometimes we have to take what we get.
