King of the West Saxons 593-597

"Ceol succeeded to the government, and reigned five years" says the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of the noble Saxon who succeeded Ceawlin to the crown of the West Saxons in the year 593.

He was the son of Cutha son of Cynric and therefore nephew of the departed Ceawlin. Ceol fought no battles and made no conquests and the Chronicle speaks nothing of his reign other than to mark its passing. He was succeeded by his brother Ceolwulf.
