A type of art form particular to the
Celts which involves interlacing and maze forms that includes
zoomorphic,
anthropomorphic and
botanical motifs. Pre-Christian Celtic knotwork is found on dressed stones and metal work. Celtic knotwork of the Christian era reached its
zenith in illustrated religious books like the
Book of Kells and the
Book of Durrow. Most often seen now depicted on t-shirts and jewelry, pottery and glassware. If
Irish dancing either solo or group, is viewed from above, the dance patterns form interlacing knotwork patterns.
The creation of Celtic knotwork follows a formal, mathematical pattern which repeats and is modified throughout the artform, whether it be a carpet, an illustrated page, or metalwork.
