Confederate States Ship Virginia was the South's first ironclad. She was built with the salvaged hull and engines of the USS Merrimack. She destroyed or damaged half of the Union naval blockade at Hampton Roads before the USS Monitor engaged her in battle. They fought to a draw.
CSS Virginia was scuttled three months later when Union forces overran Norfolk, Virginia.
