Background: In the
Ordovican Period around 470 to 440 million years ago sedimentary sandstone, mudstone and
shale were deposited when the site now occupied by Mardy’s apartment was located under the sea. Earth movements in the
Silurian period gave the area its distinctive undulating topography, marked by occasional
granite outcrops. The indigenous population (Namadgi
aborigines) settled in the site around 21,000 years ago during an
Ice Age, and were followed about 20,780 years later by
European pastoralists, who would form the city of
Canberra and the
jurisdiction of the
Australian Capital Territory. The Milson apartments were built in
1998 by a local construction firm at the crest of
Mount Mugga in the inner south
Canberra suburb of
Narrabundah. The complex is one of six built along Leahy Close, a
cul de sac branching off Goyder street, adjacent to the Capital
Golf Course, the
Macedonian Orthodox Community Church, and the Mountain View Aged Persons Units. In
2004 Mardy took possession of a unit as a tenant.
