Bruce Perens took over leadership of the Debian Project from Ian Murdock.

Under his leadership, Debian GNU/Linux 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 were developed and released.

Bruce Perens was replaced by Ian Jackson as Debian Project Leader at the beginning of January, 1998, after leading the project much of the way through the preparation for the 2.0 release.

Amateur radio enthusiast and Free Software coder, he is one of the more visible proponents of Free Software, though he has had disagreements with Eric Raymond (ESR). Lately, he has been very helpful in disentangling the myriad of "Free" or "Open Source" licenses, and has been quite eager and willing to advocate changes when the letter does not match the spirit. He also runs technocrat.net.
